Historical landmarks

St-martin_s-cathedral_edited.jpg

St. Martin’s Cathedral (Dóm sv. Martina)

Located: 2 minutes walk from the hotel.

This Gothic cathedral is one of Bratislava’s most significant landmarks. It is famous for being the coronation church of the Hungarian monarchs. Between 1563 and 1830, 11 kings (including the famous Maria Theresa) and 8 royal consorts were crowned here. Don't miss look at the top of the 85-meter tower—you will see a gilded 300kg replica of the Hungarian Royal Crown resting on a gold-plated pillow, symbolizing the cathedral's glorious past.

Bratislava Castle (Bratislavský hrad)

Located: 10-15 minutes walk uphill.

The iconic four-towered castle overlooks the Danube river and serves as the city's main silhouette. Historically, it was a strategic fortress for the Roman Empire and later the Hungarian Kingdom. The castle offers a stunning panoramic view of Bratislava and, in clear weather, parts of Austria and Hungary. Be sure to stroll through the Baroque Gardens at the back of the castle grounds.

The UFO Observation Deck & Most SNP

Located: 5 minutes walk across the bridge.

Directly in front of your hotel is the Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising (Most SNP), a unique asymmetrical suspension bridge. On top of its pylon sits the UFO structure. Take the elevator to the observation deck (95 meters high) for a 360-degree view. It is a striking contrast of Socialist Modernist architecture against the historical backdrop of the Old Town.

The Old Town and the Old Town Hall in Bratislava

Located: 3 minutes walk from the hotel.

Is a historic building on the Main Square in Bratislava and is one of the oldest buildings in Bratislava. It consists of several buildings, namely Jakub's House, Pawer's House, Unger's House, and Aponi's Palace, which were built in various artistic styles. The original part of the town hall is a house with its own tower on the eastern edge of the square. Currently, the building houses the Bratislava City Museum.

The historic center is a pedestrian zone filled with narrow streets and charming squares. While wandering, look for these gems:

  • Michael’s Gate (Michalská brána): The only city gate preserved from the medieval fortifications.

  • Main Square (Hlavné námestie): Home to the Old Town Hall and the Roland Fountain. It is the heart of the city’s social life.

  • Primate’s Palace (Primaciálny palác): A beautiful pink Neoclassical palace where the Peace of Pressburg was signed in 1805. It houses a rare collection of 17th-century English tapestries.

  • Statues of the Old Town: Keep an eye out for Bratislava's famous bronze statues, such as Čumil (Man at Work) peeking out of a manhole, and Schöne Náci, a tribute to a real-life local eccentric.

Sad Janka Kráľa (Janko Kráľ Park)

Located: 7 minutes walk from the hotel.

Established in 1774-1776, this is one of the oldest public parks in Central Europe. It is a peaceful green oasis on the right bank of the Danube, perfect for a morning walk or a quick escape from the conference buzz.

The Blue Church

Located: 15 minutes walk from the hotel.

Officially known as the Church of St Elizabeth of Hungary, but commonly referred to simply as ‘the Blue Church’ for obvious reasons, this is Bratislava’s most appealing art nouveau building. Its style, sometimes known as Hungarian Secession, is repeated in the nearby grammar school on Grösslingová Street. Both were designed by Budapest architect Edmund Lechner and built in the early twentieth century (the church was consecrated on 11 October, 1913). Both the interior and exterior of the church are painted in shades of pale blue and decorated with blue majolica; even the roof is tiled with blue-glazed ceramics. The structure incorporates a 36.8-metre round tower.

A Taste of Tradition: Slovak Gastronomy

Slovak cuisine is hearty, traditional, and influenced by its neighbors (Austria, Hungary, and Czechia).

What to try:

  • Bryndzové halušky: The national dish—small potato dumplings mixed with "bryndza" (a unique, salty sheep cheese) and topped with fried bacon.

  • Kapustnica: A rich sauerkraut soup with smoked meat, sausages, and mushrooms.

  • Zemiakové placky: Crispy potato pancakes seasoned with garlic and marjoram.

  • Local Drinks: Try local white wines from the Small Carpathian region, a local beer (such as Erb or Zlatý Bažant), or a glass of Kofola (the local herbal alternative to cola).

Recommended Restaurants nearby:

  • Slovak Pub or The Flagship Restaurant (for a traditional wooden interior and authentic atmosphere).

  • Zylinder (on Hviezdoslav Square, right by your hotel) for a mix of Austro-Hungarian and Slovak cuisine.
